The Best is the Enemy of the Good

“The Best is the Enemy of the Good”

These are great words to live by if you want to build a successful business that is always innovating and trying out new strategies and tactics to stay ahead of the competition.

The quote is attributed to the French philosopher, Voltaire (Le mieux est l’ennemi du bien), and I have found that this is one of the most important truths and powerful steps in business operations and marketing strategy. I highly respect and applaud the efforts of business owners that take pride in their creations – their new products and services and their internal processes for marketing and operations. But I share this quote with you now, because this concept has proven to be valid over and over, wherever I have worked, regardless of the type of company or the industry in which it operates.

What I’ve learned, is that at some point, something good – and not the constant pursuit of perfection – is good enough to take the next step in an organizational process, a marketing or sales program, a new product release or most any other kind of project. This allows you to get your projects or processes out in front of target customers, employees and other constituents to start benefiting from the feedback loop. You can then continue working on constant improvement to make it better over time. Good is often enough, especially if it is only slightly better than the competition. I hope clients take this to heart as they close in on finishing different phases of projects, while working toward their ultimate goals.
