Why Consultants can be so Productive

no distrations

It’s been a while since I was a outside consultant. In my long career in marketing, sales and entrepreneurship, I spent about 10 years as co-owner of a high tech public relations firm, before and during the early days of the dot com revolution. And I remember how specializing in specific industries and focusing on very specific client needs allowed me and our firm to provide quick and definable results that clients couldn’t achieve with their internal staff and resources.

With the benefit of more maturity and another 20 or so years of experience, what I’ve come to realize is that when you’re consulting, you have to be a lot more careful and accountable about how you spend your time. Consultants need to provide the best possible service and value for their clients. If you don’t use your time wisely, the day can easily get away from you, and no client will be happy that you didn’t spend quality time on their business.

When I worked in-house, it was easy to get distracted by customer emergencies, employee interactions, and lots of other daily occurrences that come with being around other employees all day. As a consultant, I make sure that I’m always working on the most strategic projects for the benefit of my clients and their corporate priorities. The sharp focus without distractions that we bring to our clients’ businesses allows consultants to be super productive and a good investment for a variety of different kinds of projects.
